About the Artist

Painting Style
Working on location and in her studio, Eleanor draws on her sensory experiences, both immediate and remembered, to communicate a sense of place in her landscapes. She works primarily with watermedia, experimenting with various water soluble products and exploring different surfaces to find a result that will enrich the process and improve the quality of the painting. Recently, she has been working on Oriental rice paper laminated to a metallic base. The random silk threads in the transparent rice paper add heightened color and texture to the surface, creating a luminescent quality raditating from the painting.

Artist's Statement
I have lived in the beautiful Adirondack Mountain region in upper New York state most of my life. I am inspired by being close to the blue mountains, formed by glaciers, surrouding areas of rural space and with the ever changing landscape of the many lakes, rivers, ponds, waterfalls, open fields, rolling hills, old trees and forests of trees. The artist part of me has been influenced by this natural setting.

I do not consider my paintings to be representational, however I have a strong, passionate, feeling and respect for this land. I hope this is evident in the paintings presented on this website and that the sense of place is evident to those who view
my work.

Education
Rowland earned a B.S.in art education at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. She also earned a graduate degree M.A. in painting and print making at SUNY, Albany, NY. She has participated in numerous workshops with nationally known artists, among them Ed Betts, Wolf Kahn and Janet Fish.

Career
She was employed for several years as an Art teacher at Glens Falls Junior and Senior High Schools. After retirement, Rowland established a business at 21 Thomson Avenue in Glens Falls, NY, known as "Artworks School of Art". Artworks consisted of four rooms on the second floor which served for teaching art classes to both adults and children. The ground floor offered three departments for the public. A large open space, "Gallery 21", where artists could display and sell their paintings, a complete inventory of art supplies for retail sale and a matting and framing department for custom made services.

From the Media
From The Post Star, Nov. 2005
Nine original paintings from local artist (Queensbury, NY), Eleanor Rowland were recently purchased and are now part of the permanent collection in the new Glens Falls Hospital building at 100 Park Street, Glens Falls, NY. The paintings are on display in the lobby and other public areas of the recently completed tower.

Mural Commission: The Village of Lake George, has recently installed a four panel mural in the Lake George Visitor's Center, measuring 9 feet by 36 feet. The mural was conceived and created by Eleanor Rowland, along with two other painters. The mural depicts the "Story of Lake George", from the arrival of the first indigenous people, through the French and Indian War, the Victorian Era and in the fourth panel, as it is enjoyed today for many visitors who vacation at this beautiful lake in the Adirondacks.
